The difficulty that some high school students have in understanding the contents of Physical Chemistry is a subject that is much discussed. Faced with this, this work seeks to identify, through a field research with students, some difficulties of students in a high school with this discipline. The results show that part of the difficulty with Chemistry in the 2nd year is due to the consequences of a fragile mathematical basis, since students claim to encounter greater difficulties with mathematical operations inherent to the study of Chemistry. Thus, a possibility to improve students' learning in the 2nd year of high school chemistry is to strengthen their mathematical basis.
