The role of the nurse in breastfeeding: a scope review study

Breastfeeding consists in a fundamental value to growth and development suitable for the child, the nurse is considered a recommended professional to accomplish the conduct related to breastfeeding, for it has an important role in the performance of interventions in individualized care. This study aims to recognize how the nurse can influence and contribute to the promotion of exclusive breastfeeding. This study is a scoping review in which the selected articles were found in the search tool Virtual Health Library (VHL), through the scientific database BDENF. As a result, the promotion of autonomy, health education actions, support networks, bond strengthening, prenatal consultations, guidance, encouragement of family support, and counseling were evidenced as strategies and actions used by nurses to encourage breastfeeding. Therefore, it is concluded that nurses play a relevant role in exclusive breastfeeding, with interventions that transcend the biological and technical dimensions.
