The nurse's role in the organ and tissue donation process: an integrative literature review

Organ and tissue donation in Brazil ranks second in the world, but is guaranteed to be the country with the largest public health program for this process, characterized by being initiated after the identification of brain death in the potential donor. For the organ and tissue donation process to occur, a multidisciplinary team is needed, where each professional has a fundamental role in the process, including the nurse. To identify the role of the nurse within the organ and tissue donation process. Integrative literature review, using the six stages of research systematization, in the consulted databases: LILACS, MEDLINE, SCIELO, BDENF with the descriptors Nursing care; Procurement of tissues and organs; Tissue bank; Collection of organs and tissues; Nursing; Role of the nursing professional; Patient care planning. In this review, seven articles that answered the research question were identified. Five (71.42%) articles present the main activities performed by nurses, one (14.28%) article discusses the difficulties that nursing professionals encounter in their experience in the process of organ and tissue donation, and the actions taken by him and one (14.28%) article focused on the role of nurses in increasing organ and tissue donation rates. The articles report the importance of the role of the nursing professional and highlight the activities performed, such as care for the potential donor, actions in organ procurement and conduct towards the donor's family. It concludes the importance of nurses' participation in the whole process of organ and tissue donation. The main functions performed by the nurse were the management of each activity within the process, the active search for potential donors, family embracement, hemodynamic monitoring and procurement of organs and tissues.
