The growing urbanization that has occurred in recent decades has brought several challenges around urban sustainability. The increase in pollution and the real threat of the climate are great incentives for promoting sustainability in cities. The construction of sustainable cities involves urban planning and the efforts of local governments in the relevant public spheres. The concept of urban sustainability has been popularized through important international studies and protocols, with the aim of cities overcoming environmental, economic and social challenges to ensure quality of life for their citizens and contribute to the development capacity of future generations. For the elaboration of this work, the quali-quantitative method was used as a research methodology, making use of several works published with great influence in the area. Sanitation proves to be one of the fundamental mechanisms to achieve the objective of sustainable development, also combined with the revitalization of rivers and streams.
